How to reduce screen time without blocking everything

Reducing screen time does not mean turning your phone into a brick. Most people still need messages, maps, banking, music, work apps and sometimes social media. The real problem is not the device. It is automatic opening.

Find the loop

The loop usually starts with a tiny trigger: boredom, stress, a hard task, a notification, or a transition between two pieces of work. You open one app for a reason, then leave 20 minutes later with no clear memory of choosing it.

Add friction before the app

The most useful intervention happens before the app opens. Ask one question: why am I opening this now? If the answer is clear, continue. If there is no answer, pause for one breath.

Protect moments, not whole categories

Blocking all social apps forever is rarely realistic. Blocking the first hour after waking, the deep-work block, or the last hour before sleep is much more effective. Context beats moral rules.
