The cold shower and forced presence

Nothing brings you back to the present moment as brutally as a cold shower. When the cold water hits your skin, there are no more thoughts about yesterday or tomorrow. There's just this, now, completely.

It's uncomfortable. And that's exactly the point.

The cold shower is a practice of involuntary presence. It also trains tolerance for discomfort, a central skill in any contemplative practice. Wim Hof popularized cold exposure, but the measured benefits go beyond the marketing: reduced cortisol, improved circulation, activation of the parasympathetic nervous system after the initial shock.

The most important part isn't the physiology. It's the mental training: learning to stay calm in the face of something unpleasant, without fleeing.

How to start: End your usual shower with 30 seconds of cold water. Breathe. Don't resist. Increase gradually.

Practice, don't just read.
